about

"Aphotic" is the debut instrumental release from Bryan Baker, a guitarist of singularly innovative, groundbreaking, and altogether expressive abilities.
Recorded and mixed in just one day at New York City's famed Avatar Studios, "Aphotic" brings together Bryan Baker's band at that time (featuring Aaron Henry on saxophone, Bryan Ladd on bass, and Nick Falk on drums) and showcases their synergy and breadth of communication.
"Aphotic" is both critically and widely accepted as being one of the key contributions by a guitarist of Bryan's generation to the advancement of both improvised and creative music on the guitar.

Review from Bill Milkowski of Jazztimes Magazine:

"A player of jaw-dropping technique and ferocious intensity with a darkly alluring musical vision, guitarist Bryan Baker is a leading light among a new breed of six-string renegades who are tearing it up with reckless abandon while pushing stylistic boundaries with impunity. His (debut record) Aphotic is the most startlingly original debut by a guitarist since Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life."

Review from AllMusic:

Aphotic is the debut album by guitarist Bryan Baker and his quartet. On it, they play through an all-original program that shows Baker to be an impressive guitarist and composer and his band to be top-quality players. Baker's compositions employ nice knotty melodies and usually multiple themes which the band negotiates with ease. These guys are in full control of the dynamics, sometimes moving quickly from quiet passages to intense ones. The tunes leave plenty of room for improvisation and both Baker and sax player Aaron Henry take full advantage. Both show a lot of restraint in their playing, not afraid to use lots of space but also able to burn when the need arises. Electric bass player Bryan Ladd makes very judicious and generally subtle use of effects, only stepping forward to solo on "Lesser Evils." Drummer Nick Falk is absolutely remarkable for the way he responds to the soloing; his playing throughout is fantastic. David Tronzo adds a bit of almost-star power to one track, but it's Baker and his band that should make you seek this one out. This is a truly impressive debut album.
